What significance do secrets have in a free society? And what are the consequences of revealing them?
The film by director Bill Condon is based on the story of the whistle-blowing platform, »WikiLeaks«: In 2010, an internet platform launched online which allows whistle-blowers to publish anonymous data which reveals dark government secrets and industrial crime. Based on true events, the thriller tells of the attempts to reveal the deceptions and corruptions of the powerful, which transformed the internet start-up into one of the most hotly debated organisation of the 21st century.
The action is based predominantly on the autobiographically-tinted publication »Inside WikiLeaks« (2011) by Daniel Domscheit-Berg about his collaboration with the internet activist Julian Assange and »WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange’s War on Secrecy«, the book published by the British journalists David Leigh and Luke Harding (2011).
