Biografie

Dr Linda Chiu-han Lai is a research-based trans-disciplinary artist, academic, and curator of contemporary media arts. Her videographic and research-creation practices explore art’s contribution to experimental historiography, with a duo focus on the history of everyday life and media archaeology, grounded in a feminist sensibility. In her 25-year full-time service at the School of Creative Media (SCM), she has created the School’s first courses in generative art, sound art, visual ethnography and media archaeology, and a dedicated laboratory series on videographic experimentation. Since 30 June 2023, Lai officially retired from the City University of Hong Kong, and has maintain her Adjunct Professorship at SCM, lecturing on Interdisciplinary Practices, New Media Art, Narrative Strategies, and Critical Theory and Socially Engaged Practices. She founded the new media art group »Writing Machine Collective« (2004- ) to explore computational thinking and contemporary art. She also founded »The Floating Projects« (2015- ), which experiments with modes of sustainability and cross-disciplinary artistic collaboration. Her works have been exhibited at the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, Open City London Documentary Festival, LOOP Barcelona, Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin, Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival, Women Make Waves (Taipei), and experimental film and video festivals in Seoul (EXiS), Taipei (EXiT), Macao (EXiM), and Kuala Lumpur (KLEX), among others. Her video works before 2014 are archived at the Video Bureau (Guangzhou, Beijing). Several of her moving image works are in the M+ collection. Her mixed media installation was part of Shanghai Biennale’s permanent collection at Power Station of Art. In 2017, Linda was awarded Artist of the Year in Media Art by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Her online video zine platform, D-Normal/V-Essay, is a Winner of Ars Electronica's »State of the ART(ist) 2022« Award (Linz, Austria).
