The human brain with its abilities to process audiovisual stimuli is the focus of the joint research project by Christian Losert, Daniel Dalfovo (ATELIER-E) and the Applied Neurocoginitive Systems team at Fraunhofer IAO in Stuttgart. »AUTOPOIESIS« investigates stimuli ("stimulations") such as colors, light flicker, shapes and sound for the human brain and what influence they have on the brain activity and concentration of humans on a conscious and unconscious level.

The stimulation situation with high-frequency video projection and binaural audio is based on scientific test experiments. Parallel to the exhibition events, the brain activities of test persons are recorded with EEG measuring devices in the Fraunhofer laboratory while they experience these sound and light stimuli. Via a brain-computer interface, the scientists obtain data for neuroscientific evaluations. In an iterative process, algorithmic calculations and machine learning methods are used to extract optimized stimuli from the analysis, leading to constant changes in the artwork. The scientific tests and evaluations are mediated via the VR headset. Is »AUTOPOIESIS« approaching an art that is designed to address brains exclusively? Is a form of reception emerging that eludes interpretability and finds its goal in pure sensation?

Concept, audiovisual composition, programming: Christian Losert and Daniel Dalfovo (ATELIER-E, Berlin); applied cognitive neuroscientific experimental research and analysis: Mathias Vukelić (Fraunhofer IAO), Ravi Kanth Kosuru (IAT, University of Stuttgart - Cooperating Institute of Fraunhofer IAO); realized in collaboration with Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO; produced in cooperation with ZKM | Karlsruhe.
